Beltsville Adventist School provides a daily lunch program for students. BAS strives to provide wholesome, well-balanced
meals that are of interest to K-8 students. All means are vegetarian. The lunch program provides a low-cost option to packing a lunch.
BAS uses a biometric method for handling lunch purchases. Biometric measurements of students thumbprints are taken at
the beginning of each year. This information is stored in the school's database and is used by the student
to make lunch/drink purchases. The system handles all the accounting and will send an email reminder
(when a guardian email address is on file) when the account has reached a low level. Each child has their own account, allowing
parents to deposit money uniquely for each child.
Cost
Lunches can be purchased with or without a drink. Drinks are milk, chocolate milk or fruit juices. Soda is not available at BAS.

What are Biometrics?
Some parents have expressed concern that BAS is retaining a fingerprint of their child at the school. That is not the case.
Biometrics is simply a measurement of selected attributes of the thumbprint. The fingerprint cannot be reproduced
with the information we retain.
BAS selected this process instead of ID cards or the previous, lunch ticket methods to reduce lost tickets. This method works
for the entire school body, which includes Kindergarten through Eighth grade students. If your student is unable to scan their
finger on a given day, their account will be noted by the teacher and their purchase will be deducted from their account.
Electronic Payments
One of the benefits of CafePlan is the ability to receive electronic deposits. CafePlan will
accept all major credit cards, checks or direct deposits through our payment handler, PayPal. PayPal provides millions
of private, secure transactions each day for customers of eBay. BAS receives the money directly from PayPal, eliminating
our need to know or retain credit card information on each family.
